Application Dos and Don’ts
DO
Make sure your CV is up to date and showcasing your most relevant experience for the type of job you are applying for – if you haven’t done a job like it before, think about what skills you have used in previous roles that could crossover (Remember your application is about demonstrating why YOU are right for the job, so mention any and all skills and experience which come up in the advert)
Check exactly what you need to send, which channel to use and who to address it to as well as the deadline. If no name is listed, I would recommend a generic ‘Good morning’ or ‘to whom it may concern’, if you have missed the deadline by under a week, still apply but acknowledge you know the deadline has passed
Save your CV as a PDF with the file name ‘YOUR NAME CV’ – remember it will sit in a list with everyone else’s so labelling it with only the job title or show will not be helpful!
Attach any cover letters or application forms as a PDF, save the body of the email for a brief message and not your actual application materials
Be patient – don’t chase for a response before the job has even closed – if it’s been closed a week, a polite request for an update is fine. If you don’t hear back, give yourself peace and assume you were unsuccessful!
DON’T
Don’t reach out to anyone in the company unless invited to do so, use the email address on the advert only
Don’t contact hiring managers on social media unless directly invited to do so
Don’t send your application materials via link, download as a pdf first
Don’t save your CV without labelling it with your name
Don’t undersell yourself – work those transferable skills!
